Abstract

This research employs a mixed-methods approach to investigate the long-term socio-economic benefits of investing in sustainable tourism infrastructure and practices in Moorea. Data collection methods include structured surveys distributed to local residents and hospitality businesses, in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, and analysis of relevant documents and literature. The collected data will be analyzed using statistical methods for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data. The expected results aim to provide comprehensive insights into the economic impacts, environmental considerations, and community well-being associated with sustainable tourism in Moorea. Additionally, the findings will contribute to informing policymakers, stakeholders, and the local community about the importance and potential of sustainable tourism development in balancing economic growth with environmental and social sustainability.

Before start

Participants will receive pre-start information outlining the purpose of the research, their role in the study, and what participation entails. This information will help participants make informed decisions about their involvement and understand the expectations and procedures of the study.

Steps

Survey

1.

A structured questionnaire will be developed to gather quantitative data on various aspects related to sustainable tourism, such as economic impacts, environmental considerations, and community well-being.

2.

Before full-scale distribution, the survey will be pilot-tested with a small group of local residents and hospitality business owners to ensure clarity, relevance, and appropriateness of the questions.

3.

Surveys will be distributed both online and in-person. Online surveys will be shared through social media, email newsletters, and local community forums, while paper surveys will be distributed to businesses, community centers, and public spaces.

4.

Surveys will be available for completion over a specified period, typically 4-6 weeks, to allow sufficient time for participants to respond.

Interviews

5.

Key stakeholders will be purposively selected to participate in the interviews, ensuring a diverse representation of perspectives from local leaders, tourism operators, environmental experts, and community members.

6.

A semi-structured interview guide will be developed, consisting of open-ended questions designed to explore participants' experiences, perceptions, and insights related to sustainable tourism in Moorea.

7.

Interviews will be conducted either face-to-face, via phone, or video call, depending on the participants' preferences and availability.

8.

All interviews will be audio-recorded with participants' consent and transcribed verbatim for analysis.

Document Analysis

9.

Relevant literature, reports, policy documents, and secondary data related to sustainable tourism in Moorea will be collected and reviewed.

10.

Documents will be categorized based on themes such as policy frameworks, tourism development plans, environmental impact assessments, and community engagement strategies.

11.

Key information, findings, and insights from the documents will be extracted and compiled for analysis.

Data Analysis

12.

Statistical software will be used to analyze the quantitative data from surveys. Descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and correlation analyses will be conducted to identify patterns, relationships, and trends in the data.

13.

Thematic analysis will be employed to analyze the qualitative data from interviews. Transcribed interviews will be coded, categorized, and thematically organized to identify key themes, patterns, and narratives.

14.

Findings from both quantitative and qualitative analyses will be compared and integrated to provide a comprehensive understanding of the long-term socio-economic impacts of sustainable tourism on island communities and hospitality businesses in Moorea.
