Abstract

This research project will seek to answer the question: What are the sources of tension between native Polynesians and individuals from France on Tahiti and Moorea? In order to answer this question, I will be surveying individuals that identify as native Polynesians, as well as individuals that have moved to Polynesia from France.

Before start

Steps

Preparing the Questionnaire

1.

Develop questions that will reveal the perceptions of tension between Polynesians and the French from the perspective of the respondent.

2.

Prior to entering the field, this questionnaire should be revised and reviewed for potential sources of bias and overall efficacy.

Finding Survey Participants

3.

Surveys will be conducted orally, and researchers will be stationed in public places across Mo'orea and Tahiti, asking individuals if they would be interested in participating in a short research survey.

3.1.

Researchers will be stationed in both rural and urban areas, as well as higher-income and lower-income communities in order to increase the diversity of responses.

3.2.

Survey data will remain anonymous, however economic information and occupation will remain tied to an individual's responses in order to accurately assess data.

Conducting the Survey

4.

Researcher will conduct the questionnaire as written.

5.

At the conclusion of the questionnaire, researcher will assess:

5.1.

Does the participant feel there is significant tension between Polynesians and the French?

5.2.

According to the participant, what are the main sources of this tension?

Analyzing the Data

6.

Data will then be compiled and analyzed for repeating themes, including frequently mentioned sources of tension by any particular occupation or economic group and the relationship between occupation and economic class and a participant's opinion regarding whether tension exists.

7.

Data will be supplemented by an historical analysis of the situation in French Polynesia and a quantitative analysis will be conducted regarding what historical events may have led to current tension.
