Abstract
This landscape study aims to assess the current state of the recreational diving industry in French Polynesia, particularly from a local community perspective. The main focus of study will be to investigate local perceptions of industry. Particularly:
- The perceived impact on the local community – whether positive or negative
- The perceived presence or absence of local participation – motivators and deterrents such as existing barriers to entry in the industry
To achieve the aims outlined, this study will also need to investigate the wider context of the French Polynesian recreational dive industry – information about which seems to be lacking in current literature. Hence, in the following protocol I highlight the procedure I followed to gather some preliminary information about the demographics of recreational scuba dive clubs in French Polynesia

Background Web Research on Dive Clubs in French Polynesia
Navigate to Google Directory of dive clubs in French Polynesia through query "Scuba diving centres in French Polynesia"
Click on "More Places"
Open "Website" link for each directory entry in a new tab
Open in a new tab each entry listing a club whose club website was not opened in step 1
For each page, open in a new tab the club's website
On each dive club's website, select the language choice to be English or use web browser built-in French to English translation tools
Note down the club name, location and web address in a spreadsheet
Scroll or navigate to the portion of the webpage that lists the club's staff - typically listed under "Our Team"
Note down the number of instructors and types of certifications possessed in the same spreadsheet. If no certification info is listed, also note this down.
Repeat for each dive club
